UNDERSTANDING THE STANDARDS - 

ANSI AND NFPA STANDARDS EXPLAINED

Both the National Fire Protection Agency, (NFPA) and the American Standards Institute (ANSI) are widely recognized as the standard bearers for their dedication to promoting and facilitating safety standards to protect lives and property in the workplace. While both are voluntary consensus standards; compliance with NFPA and ANSI is considered by OSHA to be a best practice and is highly recommended.

NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (NFPA) 

NFPA was established in 1896 and influences every building, process, service, design and installation in the U.S. and many of those used in other countries. NFPA's core mission is to help save lives and reduce damage to property and personnel as a result of a flash fire. The organization developed 3 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) category levels (formerly known as Hazard/Risk Categories or HRCs) to provide guidance on what level of FR protection and protective fabrics are needed for different tasks.  Workers need to wear varying levels of PPE protection depending on work conditions. NFPA 70E

NFPA 70E addresses electrical safety-related work practices for employee workplaces that are necessary for the practical safeguarding of employees relative to the hazards associated with electrical energy during activities such as the installation, inspection, operation, maintenance, and demolition of electric conductors, electric equipment, signaling and communications conductors and equipment, and raceways. This standard also includes safe work practices for employees performing other work activities that can expose them to electrical hazards. Compliance with NFPA 70E helps prevent injuries and casualties due to: Electrocution and shocks, arc flashes and blasts. 
  
NFPA 2112
In order to ensure flame resistance, garments must be designed, manufactured and tested according to very strict standards. NFPA 2112 FR clothing helps protect the wearer from being exposed to and seriously injured by flash fires. The NFPA 2112 standard specifies minimum requirements for the design, construction, evaluation, and certification of flame-resistant garments for use by industrial personnel, with the intent of not contributing to the burn injury of the wearer, providing a degree of protection to the wearer, and reducing the severity of burn injuries resulting from short-duration thermal exposures or accidental exposure to flash fires. It further specifies the minimum performance requirements and test methods for flame-resistant fabrics and components and the design and certification requirements for garments for use in areas at risk from flash fires.

AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDS INSTITUTE (ANSI)
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI, /ˈænsi/ AN-see) is a private non-profit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States.[3] The organization also coordinates U.S. standards with international standards so that American products can be used worldwide.
ANSI accredits standards that are developed by representatives of other standards organizations, government agencies, consumer groups, companies, and others. These standards ensure that the characteristics and performance of products are consistent, that people use the same definitions and terms, and that products are tested the same way. ANSI also accredits organizations that carry out product or personnel certification in accordance with requirements defined in international standards.
ANSI/ISEA 107-2015
One of the most dangerous conditions workers face on a job site is limited visibility. Construction, maintenance, utility, emergency responders, airport ramp personnel and many categories of off-road workers are routinely exposed to potential injury hazards from their low visibility while on the job. Ansi 107 provides guidelines for the selection and use of high visibility safety apparel such as shirts, rainwear,outerwear, safety vests, headwear, and other high-visibility accessories to improve worker visibility during the day, in low-light conditions, and at night. In 2008, the first US federal regulation to address worker high visibility apparel in federal highway environments and required the use of ANSI/ISEA 107 performance class 2 or 3 garments. This regulation was incorporated into the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), extending its application to all public access roadways and requiring all construction, utility and maintenance workers as well as emergency responders to wear high visibility safety apparel while working on or near a public roadway . In 2015 the standard was revised to include a type designation (Type O: off-road), (Type R: roadway), (Type P: public safety), in order to more easily identify the aporopriate garments for specifc applications. ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 focuses on the design requirements for background and combined-performance retroreflective materials photometric and physical performance requirements for retroreflective materials care labeling.  Onsite offers a full line of ANSI/ISEA 107-2105 compliant garments to choose from to keep your team seen and safe!
